Colleen Kay “Katie” Thomas-Matlon, 74, of Saint Paul, passed away on June 22, 2023. A Celebration of Life will be held from 3-5PM on Friday, June 30 at Spielman Mortuary, 344 University Ave W.
Colleen was raised in Rondo and traveled the world, first as an airline hostess for Northwest Airlines and later as an expatriate. Colleen raised her daughters while running a preschool in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, and lived in Hyderabad, India, where she enjoyed learning about India’s Mughal emperors and going on quests for pearls and precious stones. In her adventures, Colleen walked the halls of Versailles, communed with the great artworks of the Louvre in Paris, and discovered the Trevi Fountain with her daughters in Rome. She was a longtime volunteer at the Science Museum of Minnesota. No stranger to the outdoors, Colleen was an avid horse rider, camped in the Sahara desert, and sunbathed on the beaches of Bora Bora. As a true Minnesota woman, she always saved a special place in her heart for the Northwoods. Colleen was and is loved dearly.
Colleen is preceded in death by her parents, Leon Thomas and Carrie Blakey; siblings, Joyce Dean and Norma Jean Hancock. She is survived by her children, Penelope Thomas, Amina Para Matlon, and Jordanna (Carlos Carmona Medina) Matlon; and grandchildren, Tolosa Carmona, Augustine Carmona, and Cricket Lothrop-Matlon.
The service will be live streamed via Zoom, starting at 4 PM. (You will not be able to access this meeting anytime before 4 PM)
